Genesis 17

In Genesis 17 circumcision is initiated as a sign of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendents. Circumcision is still practiced among Jews to this day. The time following birth that is given for performing a circumcision is the 8th day. It needs to be noted the modern medicine has shown do to a peeking of potassium levels on the 8th day following birth making it the ideal time for performing a circumcision. God also changes Abraham name from Abram to Abraham and Sarah’s name Sarai from to Sarah

God also tells Abraham that next year Sarah would have a son and that his name is to be Isaac. It should be noted that Sarah was 90 years old at the time. God also tells Abraham about Ishmael decedents.

Genesis 16: 4-16

Genesis 16: 4-16 takes palce after Abraham takes Hagar as a second wife. Sshe is now pregnant causing Sarah to get jealous. Hagar flees but God intervenes telling her to return and that she will have a son who will become the father of many nations. A fact demonstrated by the fact that the Arabian people of the descendents of Ishmael.

It needs to be noted that Abraham was 86 when Ishmael was born but he would not be Abraham’s only son though the only one through Hagar

Genesis 16:1-3

Genesis 16:1-3 shows us an example of that day’s version of a surrogate mother. It also shows a lack of faith in God. In all fairness to Abraham and Sarah were just showing a normal human weakness that shows up when God timing not only is not ours but makes no sense to us. Note that that Hagar was an Egyptian suggesting that she was acquired during their time in Egypt. So their earlier failing to trust God, helped lead to this one.

Genesis 15

Genesis 15 is mainly a confirmation of the Abrahamic Covenant in which God promised that Abraham’s descendents will inherit the land of Canaan. It also predicts the 400 year sojourn in Egypt of the Children of Israel and God’s promise to bring them out of Egypt to the land of Canaan to then inherit it. Given Abraham’s advanced age and childlessness at this point a scientific look at the situation would say that this promise was impossible by natural means, particularly with the advanced age of his wife.

Genesis 14: 21-24

In Genesis 14: 21-24 he king of Sodom request to Abraham to return his people to him but told him that he could keep all of the goods recovered from the invasion. Actually by the military traditions of that day Abraham had every right to keep the goods even if the king of Sodom has said nothing. However Abraham tells the king of Sodom that he we return both the recovered goods and the people to him with the exception of the portion of the recovered goods that Abraham’s men were due for the part in the rescue. Abraham’s reason for doing this is that he did not want the king of Sodom to be able to claim the he rather than God made Abraham rich. This also prevented any possible claim on the part of the king of Sodom that Abraham owed anything to him for not making an issue about returning the recovered goods

Genesis 14:17-20

Genesis 14:17-20 introduces the rather enigmatic person by the name of Melchizedek he is called the king of Salem and the priest of the most high God. The passages further says that gave him tithes. (a tenth) There hare are two main theories on Melchizedek’s identity. One is that that he was Shem, the son of Noah. The other is that he was a preincarnate appearance of Jesus.

The view that Melchizedek was Shem has two main lines of support the first is the fact that Shem’s life did over lap Abraham’s life. The second comes from Chazalic literature which consist mainly of the rabbinic literature written from about 300 B.C. to about 650 AD. Chazalic literature gives Melchizedek as a nickname used to refer to Shem. If indeed Abraham and Shem knew each other then Shem could have given Abraham historical material on the Flood; of which Shem was a whiteness; and of event from creation to the Flood. This would provide an ordinary reason the Biblical account could be more factually reliable than the Babylonian flood account.

The view that Melchizedek was a preincarnate appearance of Jesus is supported the vary terms used to refer to him. Melchizedek means King of righteousness and Salem means peace so he is called the King of peace. This fact is state in Hebrews 7 along with statement of him having no mother and father no a beginning or en of life. Hebrews 7 further states that he was “made like unto the Son of God.” Only Jesus being God could literally fulfill this description.

Genesis 14:13-16

Genesis 14:13-16 shows what happened when Abraham finds out that Lot was taken captive he get his men together and goes after the invading kings. The relatively small band sneaks into the invader’s camp, kills them rescues the captives, including Lot and recovers all of the goods taken by the invaders. Abraham shows faith in God here by taking on an overwhelmingly superior force.

Genesis 14:1-12

Genesis 14:1-12
These vereses describe an invasion that results in Sodom and Gomorrah being sacked and it people taken prisoner. Note that by this time Lot was living in Sodom. He went from look towards Sodom to living in it.
The historical nature of these events is supported by the list of specific kings and nations involved. A writer of fiction would not likely go to all this trouble, Further more a story handed down only by word of mouth would probably not retain such details even if it were base on a real event. This is consistent with this account being based on a written account of the events passed down from Abraham and eventually to Moses.

Genesis 13: 14-18

In Genesis 13: 14-18 God promises the land of Canaan to Abraham’s descendents specifically the Jews. This why support of the nation of Israel right to the land needs to be supported. These verses also indicate that Abraham’s descendents would be huge in number and to day that is certainly the truth despite multiple efforts exterminate the Jews they survive because of God’s protection.

Genesis 13: 5-11

Genesis 13: 5-11is the point where the flocks of Abraham and Lot got so big that they had separate from each other. Now being the elder of the two Abraham could have chosen where to go but he graciously let Lot choose. Lot chose the best land available rather than letting his uncle Abraham have it.

Genesis 13:1-4

In Genesis 13:1-4 Abraham left Egypt with his entire house hold and possessions he returned to Beth-el back to the altar he had built earlier. This is a case of him returning to God’s will.

Genesis 12: 14-20

In Genesis 12: 14-20  we see some of the affects of Abraham’s disobedience to God and his deception on the part of his wife. One of the things that supports the historical nature of the Biblical account is the fact the Bible show the flaws of its greatest heroes.

At first things because of his Deception Abraham acquires many possessions including maidservants one of which was probably Hagar who late becomes the mother of Ishmael. However God sends plagues on Pharaoh’s house. This Pharaoh was quite possibly Khufu the builder of the great pyramid of giza or his son. In any event this causes Pharaoh to realize that Sarah was Abraham wife and sends them away.

God actually used this to get Abraham back on track and back to the land of Canaan where God wanted him.

These event would have taken place in the 19th century BC. Now it is true that conventional dating of Egyptian History places Khufu in the 26th century BC but there exists an improved chronology that corrects the problems of the conventional chronology. This correction moves Khufu to the 19th century BC.

Genesis 12: 11-13

In Genesis 12: 11-13 Abraham shows a failure to trust God for his protection, by engaging in this deception was also disrespecting his wife and putting her at risk. However it needs to be noted that this was not a technically a lie in that as we will later find out Sarah was his half sister being the daughter of his father but not his mother. This would not have caused an inbreeding problem as it does today since there would have been fewer mutations back at this time than even a few hundred years later. That said Abraham was still wrong to engage in such a deception even if was partly true.

Analytical Thought Claimed to Reduce Religious Beliefs

Analytical Thought Claimed to Reduce Religious Beliefs

A new study published in Science Magazine concludes analytical thought reduces religious beliefs. The study showed participants intuitively attractive questions for which the intuitive answer is wrong. The participants were then asked about their religious beliefs. The result showed that those that indicated stronger religious beliefs were more likely to give the more intuitive answers. They were then given stimuli that encouraged either analytical or intuitive thought. They were then retested on religious beliefs and those encouraged intuitive thought expressed increased strength in religious beliefs while those encouraged either analytical thought expressed less. The conclusion was that concludes analytical thought reduces religious beliefs. However there are a number of problems with these studies.

The first problem is that the questions on religious beliefs were vague general questions. Some religious beliefs are more intuitive while others are more analytical. For example new age is almost entirely intuitive being based largely on practices like meditation. On the other hand Christianity is more analytical in that it is based on historical events such as the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. There is no consideration in these studies of such differences and the specifics of what participants believed and why.

The second problem is that there is no correlation of individuals given between the different methods. This is important because such a correlation should show who is more likely to be affected. For example it could show that more analytical people are less affected by the stimuli than more intuitive people or the exact opposite. The point is that no such correlation is given so there is no way to know how individual responses correlate across each method.

While these studies are interesting they are way too broad and lack consideration of factors that could have affected the results.

Genesis 12: 7-10

Genesis 12: 7-10 shows that when he first came to the land of Canaan that God told Abraham that this was the land that he was to go to. God further promised it to Abraham’s descendents.
It seems that at first Abraham mad steps to settle down but then kept going south because of a famine. He eventually went to Egypt not yet fully trusting God to fulfill his needs. This famine fits well with the theory of the ice age being caused by Genesis Flood since these events would have occurred near the end of this ice age with the accompanying shifts in climate.

Genesis 12: 4-6

Genesis 12: 4-6
These verses show that Abraham left the town of Haran with his wife and his entire house hold and his possessions. His nephew Lot went wit him. Abraham was 75 years old at the time.
They arrive in the land of Canaan arriving at Sichem. The in habitants of the land at the time were the Canaanites. They were the decedents of Canaan. the son of Ham and grand son of Noah.

Genesis 12:1-3

Genesis 12:1-3
Here is where God called Abraham to leave his father’s house to got to the land of Canaan at this point God does not tell Abraham exactly where he is going wanting him to take a step of pure faith God also promises to make from him (no children yet) an entire nation and to bless him. Abraham is called Abram here because God later changes his name to Abraham.

There is nothing that scientifically useful here but it is background to what follows.

Genesis 11:10-26

Genesis 11:10-26 shows an immediate drop in life span following the flood, Shem who was born 98 years before the flood lived just 600 years as opposed to 800+ years for his ancestors. Also for those born after the Flood there was a further drop to less than 500 years. And following Babel; as indicated by Peleg; there was a sudden drop of 200 years.

Genesis 11:10-26

Genesis 11:10-26 starts of a new tablet listing direct ancestry line from Shem to Abraham. The Genealogy shows an immediate drop in life span following the flood, Shem who was born 98 years before the flood lived just 600 years as opposed to 800+ years for his ancestors. Also for those born after the Flood there was a further drop to less than 500 years. And following Babel; as indicated by Peleg; there was a sudden drop of 200 years.

Genesis 11:5-9

Genesis 11:5-9 shows an act of judgment to get man to finally spread out over the Earth God changed their language so that they suddenly spoke different languages. This is the only recorded time that God interferers directly with the Human mind and even in this he did not interfere with their free will. This dispersion is actually supported by DNA Evidence. (see reference below)

Genesis 11:4

Genesis 11:4 shows that under Nimrod's leadership the people of that day started building a city so as to stay together rather than spread over the Earth as God had commanded. They also started to build a tower that as to be a center of worship. The reference to the reaching unto heaven may have just have been a reference to it being so high that it towered over the rest of the city, it may have been a purely figurative reference to worship, it may have severed to an observatory of the star.

It is however quite possible that they trying to actually get up to God by their own action. If so it's an excellent example of foolishness in action. Not only is the maximum height of a fire burned brick tower quite limited, but God does not live up the sky but rather he is from out side our universe.

Genesis 11:1-4

Genesis 11:1-4
This verse shows that everyone had descended from eight people and that they had stayed together makes it logical that their language would be the same. The land of Shinar was roughly part of modern-day Iraq and this reference shows familiarity with the area since dried or fire burnt bricks are the most practical building material in that part of the world. This is actually supported by DNA Evidence. (see reference)

Genesis 9:4-7

Genesis 9:4-7
Verse four is a propitiation against consuming blood and it is a clear statement of a scientific principle of blood’s importance to life. This was clearly not believed by though that would bleed people trying to heal them. Verse six represents a clear declaration by God of the death penalty for murder. In verse seven one again God is telling Noah and his sons and their wives to have lot of kids to repopulate the Earth. God repeats this several times showing its importance.

Genesis 8:3-5
Genesis 7:17 says the Flood water started going down after 150 days, and then drained for another 150 days, (Genesis 8:3) for a total of 300 days which would be 10 months. Furthermore verse 4 says the Ark land on the 17th day of the 7 months which would be five months after the Flood started. Verse 5 says the mountains were first seen on the on the 1st day of the 10th month or 253 days after the Flood started.

Note: verse 4 says that the Ark landed in “upon the mountains of Ararat” not on Mount Ararat. So not finding the Ark on Mount Ararat it self proves nothing.

Genesis 8:2

Genesis 8:2
The word stopped not only means to end but also to close. Verse 2 is indicates that the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were closed at this point. This consistent with the earlier suggestion the Earth atmosphere was the “windows of heaven” opened by water from the fountains of the deep ripping through it. Once eruption of subterranean water ended the whole collapsed back closing the “windows of heaven.” The shock wave from the closer may have been the wind mentioned in verse one. Not that this resulted in the rain ending. This would have occurred after forty days.

Genesis 8:1

Genesis 8:1
This verse does not imply that God forgot Noah and all that were in the Ark with him, but rather it shows that God did not for get them. Genesis 7:19-24
These verse make it clear this Flood was a global flood. It clearly that the heist mountains in world at that time were covered with water io a depth of 15 cubits. This means that this flood had to be a Global Flood since any Flood covering the highest mountains in the world would by definition be a global Flood. The fact that Noah’s Flood was global is further supported by the fact that all land animals died.

Genesis 7:13-18
This is an article on the firmament mentioned in Genesis 7:13-18.
These verses indicate that Noah and his family entered the ark on the same day. One question often asked is whether or not the ark could be loaded with the needed animals in a day.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

Genesis 7:1-3

Genesis 7:1-3 mentios the animals going in to the Ark 2 by 2. God told Noah to take different amounts of different kinds of animals.

Clean beasts – 7 of every kind: Includes cattle, sheep and other animals used for sacrifices. The reason for this is clear since more than two would be needed so sacrifices could be made with out killing off the kind. They
would also be used for food after the Flood.

Unclean beasts – 2 of every kind: This would include all kinds of land animals not included in the other categories. They would be used for neither sacrifices nor food.

Fowls – 7 of every kind: This would include all winged animals not just birds but flying insects, bats and pterodactyls. Now before you jump on the “see the Bible has errors” band wagon you need to realize that the use fowls here is a translation of the Hebrew word “owph” which includes more than just birds, so the Bible is not in error here.

Genesis 6:9-10

Genesis 6:9-10 is the being of Noah’s tablet or writing. The term “perfect in his generations” seems to indicate that Noah’s family was not involved in the events of his day, specifically those mentioned in verse 2. In fact the Bible is clear by the time of the Flood Noah’s family were the only genuine believers in God left.

Genesis 5:32

Genesis 5:32
It is clear from Genesis 11 that not all of these three sons were born in Noah’s 500th year. This is because Shem had a son at age 100, two years after the Flood. Since Noah was 603 at the time Shem would have been born when Noah was 503.

Lamech is the first recorded case if bigamy he had two wives named Adah and Zillah. Adah's son Jabal was first nomadic herdsman. Adah's son Jubal was the first musician. Zillah's son Tubal-cain was the first metal working including brass and iron.

Tubal-cain sister Naamah is one of only four woman from before the Flood mentioned by name. She most likely married one of male descendants of Seth one possibility Ham. This is consistent with mitochondrial data which shows that Mrs. Shem and Mrs. Japheth were more closely related to each other than they
were to Mrs. Ham.

Genesis 4:16-17

This is an article on the Cain’s wife and city mentioned in Genesis 4:16-17. This brings us to the most common question asked about the Bible “Where did Cain get his wife?” The answer is so simple that most people never consider it. She was his sister. While such inbreeding would a problem today, do to the high number of mutations siblings have in common it would not have been a problem in earlier generations.

Science and Religion in Conflict

Science and Religion in Conflict
This video is about the conflict between Science and Religion. The scientific establishment refusal of all consideration of the supernatural mans that when mainstream science and religion deal with the same topic there will be conflict with the exception of Atheism which denies the supernatural.

This is particularly the case with Cristianity where the Biblical account tell us that God directly created man but the scientific establishment claims based on absolute naturalism that we evolved from ape like animales.

Genesis 4:1-2

Genesis 4:1-2

This is a commentary on the birth of Cain and Abel mentioned in Genesis 4:1-2. This is an account of Adam's and Eve's fist children. It is often mistakenly assumed they Cain and Able were their only children, but that is not true. First of all later in this chapter a third son is mentioned named Seth and in the next chapter they are said to having had sons and daughters.

Genesis 3:14

Genesis 3:14
This suggests that snakes originally had legs and lost them as part of the curse related to Man’s fall. Indeed a fossil snake with small hind legs had been found. The most likely explanation for this fossil is that at the fall God turned off the genes in a snake for making legs and in some cases before the Genesis Flood a mutation turn it back on enough to produce legs in an unless, or reduced function form.

Genesis 2:24-25

Genesis 2:24-25

This is the first reference to marriage in the Bible. Note that God ordained marriage between a man and a woman so the Biblical definition of marriage is a union between a man and a woman, referring to them as “one flesh.” As a result no one and no government has any right to define it in any other way. The enter idea of homosexual marriage is not only a contradiction in terms but is a deliberate attack on the Biblical definition of marriage. It is being pushed by people who are desperately trying to get acceptance of their immorality.

In these vereses God creates the first woman; Eve. It is interesting that God useda rib because if it is removed while leaving the periosteum; a membrane around the rib, it will grow back. This strongly supports the historical nature of this account since it is unlikely that a 1st or 2nd millennium B.C. writer would know this fact or make the right choice by chance.

Video on the Burden of Proof

Video on the Burden of Proof

Burden of Proof is the obligation of a party to provide sufficient evidence in support of their side of a dispute or issue.

The side with the burden of proof is obligated to provide evidence to back up their view point. Determining the burden of proof is not always easy to do because it varies in different circumstances and changes in the course of the discussion.

In practical meaning the term “burden of proof” is actually a little strong because it implies the need to prove beyond a doubt. In practice it is really the burden of evidence.

Genesis 2:18-20

Genesis 2:18-20

When these events occurred Eve had not yet been created. God creates some additional animals in front of Adam so he could see God do it. God then has Adam name each kind of animal. This naturally raises the question of “Could Adam have named all these animals in one day?”

Genesis 2:17

Genesis 2:17

There was one exception to Adam being able to eat from all of the trees of the garden. He and Eve were specifically forbiden to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There was probably nothing special about the fruit of this tree that would bring death other than that eating from it would be disobeying God. God was not being cruel but rather was giving man a test, and he was even making it as simple as possible. It was one tree among many and the command was extremely simple. The reason for the test was God did not create robots but wanted man to obey Him of his own free will.

Genesis 2:15-16

Genesis 2:15-16

Man was place in the garden of Eden to tend it thus work was instuted befor man's fall. This work would not have been the drudgery that is often seen in work today that is shown to have cone into play after the fall as part of the curse. Adam is also told the he may freely eat of threes of the garden as payment thus further supporting earlier indications of man originally vegetarian.

Genesis 2:8-9

Genesis 2:8-9
8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

This verse mentions two specific trees. They are the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil both of which are involved in later events.

Genesis 2:7

The creation of man is described in Genesis 2:7 which putts an end to any idea of reconciling the Bible with
Evolution. This is not a surprise since the entire evolutionary theoretical system assumes as a starting assumption the Bible is wrong. It is also interesting how in such attempts always require the Bible to bow the knee to evolution rather than the other way around.

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
